The Search for Fire

The joy of a simple fire

My school had the wonderful idea to have a camping themed reading night.  This brought about a rather distinct division in the office.  We all understood camping fashion; the clothes, tents, sing along songs and even smores

However when the concept of a fire came up the real story began.   Some people wanted it, and some did not.  The following is what happened; more or less.  And yes….someone got burned….

This is a story of one sweet night of camping at the lake….

and a quest for fire despite the mire and all that it would take…

The principal said and shook her head to the idea of the flame…

For in her thoughts danced about infernos to be tamed…

But despite her own best advice a fire that night did dance…

It started small but grew so tall from nothing to a chance…

The kids all came and lined right up so calm without a fight…

And eyes of all adults and child enchant in pure delight…

Sticks were sharpened.. wood was added… fuel for all the heat…

Mosquitoes flew so far away knowing they were beat….

Mallows were marshed.. chocolate melted.. right upon the stakes…

Kids were safe ..and the smores.. complete with no mistakes…

And yet right here… was one lad… and on his hand was burned

Blisters rose like smoking secrets from the fiery urn…

Twas no fire upon his hands but blisters they were there…

A lantern he had grasped right beside his favorite chair…

A book was being read so very safe beneath a tree….

And there he was burned with a fire nowhere to see…

So many lessons learned.. with camping safe for true….

unless under a tree with stories read to you…

  1. Love those lines! Kind of ironic, playing it safe with fire extinguishers and safety fence, that one poor soul would burn their hand on a lantern. Ah, life….

    • No kidding….Child was in my class as well…Not his finger tips eaither. He grabbed that lantern with his whole hand in the calmest, most peaceful area we had that night….On the other hand…the fire was safe as it could be:)

  2. this all makes me laugh so wildly…camping and Canada are one and the same, everyone here camps, we all have fireplaces, and fire pits in our back yards, yes in the yard…we die if we do not know fire well, and we eat things we cook over it all the time…my brother can do amazing things with foil, a fire pit, chicken potatoes and veggies…oh the stories…lol, this is just too funny
